Whether you’re renting or buying, it’s an unfortunate fact that relocating to a large metropolitan area tends to mean less space for more money. Moving from a relatively large space to a smaller one can be stressful, leaving you pulling your hair out trying to figure out where to store everything. Here are some tips on how to organize your space and maximize your storage potential.

1. Store in places that are hidden but accessible. There many storage containers made to fit under your bed, and this is great way to store things that need to be easily accessible but out of the way at the same time. If you’re low on closet space, consider putting your bed on platform risers and gain additional storage space underneath.

2. Look for multi-purpose furnishings. Many ottomans, coffee tables and even couches can double as storage areas. Many of these multi-purpose pieces have pretty spacious area that are at your fingertips, but but don’t cramp the style of your decor. If you are living in a loft space or a studio apartment, there are many pieces of furniture that can pull double duty with two distinct purposes, like a hide-a-bed or a futon.

3. Label everything. Even if you’ve got everything stored and out of the way, there’s nothing worse than being so disorganized that you can’t find what you need. Skip the hassle of searching through your entire house. Make sure to put like items together and then label whatever container you use. If you really want to get OCD, you can also make a corresponding chart that keeps the contents of your boxes recorded in one place to make retrieval quick and easy.
