During this holiday season, more than 500 foster children in 22 Alabama counties received new bicycles for Christmas. Phillip’s Bicycles for Foster Kids is a non-profit group in Talladega County hoping to share this Christmas cheer by raising money to distribute bicycles to memorialize Phillip. The non-profit group is named in memory of Phillip Vick who was a foster parent for 66 children before his sudden passing at the age of 48. His sister-in-law, Marcia Vick stated, “He asked that people send bicycles to the funeral rather than flowers. He felt like bicycles would put a smile on a foster child’s face for a lot longer than flowers would do anybody any good.” Phillip’s funeral saw over 100 bicycles and the donations continued to arrive.

After this holiday season, the group will have donated 3,100 bicycles to foster children. In recent years, the group has seen success thanks to a bulk discount offered to them by Huffy Bicycles. Coleman Worldwide Moving, a Birmingham moving company, provides Phillip’s Bicycles for Foster Kids free transportation from Huffy’s distribution center in California to Childersburg Church of God in Childersburg, Alabama. Once the bicycles arrive to the church, each bicycle is assembled, anointed with oil, and prayed over before being given to the child.
