Moving a household can be a daunting chore. There are so many details to remember and decisions to make. Sorting through all your belongings takes time. Everything can be put into three categories: what to take with you, what to put in storage, and what to get rid of.

Here are some tips:

Clothing: Before moving is a good time to sort through and donate unused clothing, shoes and other items cluttering the house. You may want to put opposite season items in storage, but in general it’s not a good idea to store old clothes that you will never wear.

Toys: Most children have many more toys than they play with. Consider keeping the favorites and putting the other toys in storage. If a child really misses something you can get it for them, but most children will be content with the remainder and you will be happy with fewer toys under foot.

Holiday decorations: Seasonal decorations are the perfect thing to put in storage until the time comes that you will need them.

Documents: You need to keep important records, like birth certificates, marriage license, car registration, etc. with you in a safe locked box where you can retrieve them as needed. Other older records and documents can be stored away. Be sure you label all boxes for easier retrieval.
