Moving to a new home is exciting, but the process can be cumbersome and time consuming.  Whether you are moving locally or embarking on a  long-distance move, you have to pack and load everything you’ve accumulated over the years.  Even if you choose a company to help you that offers comprehensive moving services including packing, the more “stuff” you have, the more time and money you will spend—so lighten the load!

Go Paperless

It’s a digital age, so use it to your advantage.  You can store records, bills, and other documents electronically by investing in a scanner if you don’t already have one.  This will eliminate at least a few heavy boxes from your move. It will also help you keep your new home less cluttered.

Plan for Your Space

If you have furniture that you know you’re going to get rid of or replace, it makes sense to eliminate these items before you move and save some money.  Have a plan for your new space, and sell or donate anything you’re not going to use.

De-Clutter Your Closet

It’s time to weed out the wardrobe.  Most of us have items that are in the back of the closet or a drawer that haven’t seen the light of day for years, but we keep them because we might wear them “someday.”  It might be time to stop waiting for someday and donate your extra clothing to a good cause. Then you can cross a few more heavy boxes off the list.

Small Things Add Up to Big Boxes

Take a walk around your house with an eye for the unnecessary.  Make a list of the things that you don’t need or want anymore, decide what can be discarded, and have a garage sale to get rid of the rest.  Look for things like:

  • Knick Knacks: Do you still like them, or do they mean something to you?  Will they fit into the décor of your new home?

  • Kitchen Gadgets: The melon baller that you got for your birthday might need to find a new owner—only keep what you actually use.

  • Stored or Unused Items: Go through every storage box, drawer, cabinet, and closet, and add things to the discard or garage sale lists.
