Coleman Allied and University of Alabama Team with Kid's Wish Network

by MattBolin 14. June 2011 01:09

What do Jack Vickers and Nick Saban have in common?

Both drive University of Alabama Football.  In Jack’s case, he literally drives the Coleman Allied University of Alabama Football Trailer and has for the past six years.

When he’s not travelling with the team to each away game, the Coleman American Moving Services driver has maintained the trailer with a busy 2011 schedule before even nearing the smell of SEC tailgating, fall weather, and the snap and crackle of pads and helmets colliding.  Thus far this year, Jack has been to Orlando for the 2011 Capital One Bowl, has helped put a unifying face towards Tornado relief efforts, and has maintained his duties at Coleman American Moving Services Midland City, AL headquarters.

For anyone who is a fan of our Coleman American Moving Services Facebook Fan Page, may have seen this post from one of Coleman’s corporate employees  pop up a couple of days ago:

Jack was able to play a huge role in Jarvis’s life as Coleman American Moving Services supported the Kid’s Wish Network by giving Jarvis a memorable road trip and a truck large enough to hold the contents of his big shopping spree.  Wiregrass Area CBS Affiliate, WTVY News 4 has a video below detailing Jarvis’s journey followed with some pictures that were taken during Jarvis’s big day:

Moving on a Budget? Coleman Allied Suggests Recycling used Boxes!

by MattBolin 1. June 2011 23:50

The moving company has left, you have unpacked, but there’s a pile of cardboard boxes taking up space in the garage. Your first thought might be to take them to a recycle center, which is an option, but cardboard takes a lot of energy to recycle. It is better when the boxes can be reused.

1.    Give boxes to a charity. Local food pantries often need cardboard boxes to transport food. Be generous and offer to deliver them.

2.    Post your boxes on a moving company’s message boards. These are public forums where you can either sell or give away your boxes. List the number of boxes you have, the approximate sizes, and the cost per box. Or you could offer one price for all your boxes.

3.    Some moving companies offer drop-off and pick-up locations for boxes. This is a free service meant to swap favors between movers. But be sure to down your boxes and bundle similar sizes to make transporting them easier.

4.    Give your boxes away on Craiglist.org. Under “for sale” there is a “free” tab.  Just make an ad with the number and type of boxes you have and arrange to be available for pick-up.

5.    Sell your boxes on BoxQuest.com or BoxCycle.com. These sites help the environment by making sure gently used boxes get reused. You simply sign up, fill in the blanks to create your ad, and the website will help you find a buyer. They advertise for you and deal with collecting the payment. You just make yourself available for the pickup.

Feel good about making sure your boxes are being reused. When you recycle you are contributing to a healthy environment!

Coleman Allied Assists With Tornado Relief Efforts

by MattBolin 10. May 2011 19:18

On April 27, 2011, tragedy struck close to home for many as tornadoes ravaged its way across the south.  Of that devestation, none appeared to be harder hit than Central and North Alabama especially around the areas of Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Cullman, and other smaller surrounding areas. This natural disaster prompted President Barack Obama to tour the damage less than 48 hours later where he would state that, "I've never seen devastation like this." Since that time, the outpouring of help from within the state and all over the country has been overwhelming.

Below, there is a brief announcement attached detailing some of Coleman Allied's support followed by photos of donated goods that filled the University of Alabama Trailer. This is one example of the assistance provided by this moving company, as our Virginia-area locations are also helping assist with the relief efforts for victims in Gloucaster, Va.

The City of Dothan and Houston County set up a centralized drop off point for the collection of items requested by the Alabama Emergency Management Agency for tornado relief efforts in North Alabama.

At a press conference Monday, Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz, Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver, Dothan Fire Department Public Information Officer Chris Etheridge and other city and county officials announced that the Westgate Fire Station at 401 Westgate Parkway would be the main drop off point for items requested by the state EMA to help those affected by the deadly tornadoes that recently rampaged through North Alabama.

Coleman American Moving Services donated their 53 ft. custom wrapped Alabama football trailer to collect and haul these needed items to Tuscaloosa. The truck is now loaded and on it's way to Tuscaloosa.

Our thanks go out to everyone who has helped and plans to help with the relief efforts.

Coleman Allied Ensures Quality Summer by Hosting Allied Quality Committee

by MattBolin 28. April 2011 01:09

More people move during the summer months between May and August than any other time of the year. The kids are out of school, the weather is warm and beautiful, and many front yards become decorated with for sale signs. While the summer roads are increased with moving traffic, it’s important for a consumer that their goods are relocated in a safe, timely, and efficient fashion. Therefore, twice a year, Allied Van Lines Quality Committee meets and discusses the year, the industry, and ways to improve quality across the Allied Van Lines network. This committee consists of senior Allied management and members of various agents in the Allied network. This year, the committee met at Coleman American Moving Services Houston, TX location to prepare for the National Moving Month in May and the upcoming summer moving season. The topics of the meeting varied across the spectrum with issues such as:

· Claims and revenue processing

· Quality management and quality performance reviews

· Allied’s Certified Labor Program (This program requires that all labor has a background check ran on an individual basis to ensure that quality help is being placed in each home).

· Allied’s Better Together Platform (This program encourages teamwork between the Allied’s agents).

· Q&A session on improving quality.

For Allied Van Lines and Coleman American Moving Services, these bi-annual meetings are crucial in terms of sharing communication with both Allied management and other members of Allied’s vast agent network. Quality and consumer satisfaction are two staples of the Allied brand which is highlighted via Allied’s website here. Understanding how to improve quality is important in order to keep customer satisfaction with the services of Coleman American Moving Services running high and allow for more satisfactory letters like the one below to be sent.

Coleman Allied Participates in Houston County Spirit of Service Day

by MattBolin 7. April 2011 01:30

In this article, Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz commented on Spirit of Service Day’s great 22 year history, “The Spirit of Service Day is a great tradition in our city that allows us as a community to come together. That's what makes our community so awesome. We have so many people that care about where we live and our future." Wiregrass community involvement has been well documented with examples like this WTVY article or even the Wiregrass United Way participation of this moving company.

This year Coleman American Moving Services will offer support to Wiregrass Children’s Home as our Spirit of Service Company project. We are encouraging all employees to donate such items as: paper towels, toilet paper, children’s toothpaste, cleaning supplies, and school supplies. We hope that this small measure of kindness will make a huge and direct impact on many Wiregrass-area children’s lives and helps them continue to focus on enjoying the joys that childhood bring.

If you would like to find ways that you can help participate in your own local communities, Coleman American Moving Services encourage you to check out getinvolved.gov. This government website will help you find local community service projects in need of volunteers.

Four Basic Computer Buying Tips

by MattBolin 26. March 2011 01:45

When planning or completing a move, you fully appreciate the amount of work and time that goes into getting and keeping a house in order.  From beginning the moving process by scheduling a free in-home estimate all the way through unpacking and situating your belongings while learning the layout of a new city, there’s an increased amount of stress that goes with this change.  Due to this stress, some families may choose to use part of their leftover budget by upgrading on various electronic devices.  Coleman American Moving Services, an agent for Allied Van Lines, would like to provide you with some basic tips when purchasing and transitioning into new devices or electronics starting with buying a new computer.

·        Research and Understand Your Needs:
We all buy computers for varying reasons; therefore, understanding your specific needs remains important when deciding what the proper specifications and cost one should associate with a purchase.  For example, someone who wants to build a computer for gaming is going to spend upwards of four times the amount that someone who is just using their system email, web browsing, and word processing.

·        Think about Longevity:
The old adage “you get what you pay for” is especially true when buying a computer. When buying a laptop, try to buy with the intent of having technology that will at least hold up for three years. When buying a desktop pc, know what can be upgraded in the system down the line in order to insure overall longevity.  Normally, understanding video card upgrades and the maximum RAM the computer’s motherboard can hold are great places to start.

·        BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP!
Depending on the amount of files, photos, music, and other media you plan on transferring, the choices for storage may vary between DVD-R/+R, USB Thumb Drives, or better yet an external USB Hard Drive.  USB Hard Drives are also useful for backing up all data in case the unthinkable happens.  This great lifehacker article provides one possibility for utilizing backups. For you online shoppers in search of a solid USB Hard Drive, Newegg has a great variety and user-based reviews to help you make an educated decision.

·        Viruses are BAD!
A consequence to the digital age is that the internet is under constant attack, therefore, making security that much more important.  Nowadays, many computers come preinstalled with six months to a year of a security suite.  If the computer you have in mind provides this amenity, then this step doesn’t apply to you as long as you keep it updated and realize that switching to another suite can be quite burdensome. For those that weren’t afforded this luxury, DO YOUR RESEARCH! A solid review site such as the one on CNET can provide you with expert advice on the various software packages that exist.  However, the best advice is to not skimp on features. Antivirus, Spyware, and Adware prevention is an absolute must when considering protection, and most packages that cost around $60-$80 a year will provide you with these features as well as additional firewall protection and offsite data storage.

These simple steps should start you on your way to make an educated post moving computer upgrade!

Coleman Allied: From Moving Company to Moving Float for a Day in Strawberry Festival

by MattBolin 19. March 2011 01:14

Small towns and cities all across the United States hold little events year after year that honor their heritage.  On Thursday, we highlighted one of these more well-known events with Savannah, Georgia’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.  However, there are many other events that honor many staples of small American culture through parades, fairs, pageants, races etc. Plant City, Fl celebrates this tradition with its annual Florida Strawberry Festival and describes this notion beautifully on its website when it states, “The fabric of American life is woven into the Festival through social events, contests, youth developmental programs, top-name entertainment, and parades with glorious floats and high-stepping marching bands.”

Coleman American Moving Services, a Tampa Mover, was proud to sponsor a float in this year’s Plant City, Fl Strawberry Festival parade and witnessed a community have ten days of exciting events.  As a moving company in Florida, Coleman American was delighted to take some time away from the day to day activities of the moving business and offer a helping hand by participating in this great community event.

Below are some of the photos of the float while on the parade trail during a beautiful day in Central Florida:

Coleman Allied Wishes You a Happy Saint Patrick's Day

by MattBolin 17. March 2011 18:36

On March 17th, millions of Americans will suddenly go green. No, going green is not an Al Gore, Greenpeace, go paperless, and save the environment go green.  Instead, millions of people, whether of Irish descent or not, will celebrate our nation’s Irish heritage when we partake in the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day. On this day, if someone can find a way to turn something green without irreparably damaging an item then it will be turned green.  On St. Patty’s Day, people from all over will find green clothing, green cold beverages, green icing, green eggs, green ham, green rivers, and green fountains on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.  To add to all things green, hundreds of cities across the US celebrate their own Irish heritage.

One of the largest parades in the country happens to take place near our Savannah Movers service center right along the historic Savannah downtown area.  According to the City of Savannah’s website, Savannah, GA has held a public parade since 1824, and the parade happens to attract over 300,000 visitors each year from all over the world who crowd the streets of Georgia's oldest city. For anyone looking to attend any of the festivities this year or in future years can visit the below links for some useful tips and information regarding the event.  To everyone celebrating all over the world tonight, Coleman American Moving Services wishes everyone a happy and safe Saint Patrick’s Day.

Coleman Allied Presents: The Moving Playlist Volume One

by MattBolin 19. February 2011 01:25

In this new age of iPods, smart phones, and other modern technologies, the art of making a great mix tape or mix CD finds itself turning into a forgotten and almost dead art form.  The remnants of this lost art form can be found hidden within most computers and mp3 players in the form of playlists, and if you check Google, Amazon mp3, iTunes, or any other source for music, you will found thousands upon thousands of suggestions for playlists. Playlists vary from person to person in the same ways that a mix tape or a mix c.d. varied from person to person.  Some people just put together a random mix and match of songs they have at their disposals, some play copious amount of time making sure the playlist flows and transitions smoothly throughout the disc, and then there are those who lie in the middle and just try to stick to a theme of sorts.

Playlists are great for all kinds of occasions whether it be romance, workout, stress relief, or even the occasional road trip.  However, try searching for a playlist to go along with the stresses of moving, and you may be struggling through Google for awhile.  At Coleman American Moving Services, we aim to be a superior full service mover whether through residential moving, international moving, corporate relocation, or any other moving company or relocation services.  This will be the first in a series of finding the perfect blend of ten tunes to help you relax and transition into the next chapter of your life.     If you have any suggestions for us to include in other installments, feel free to drop some suggestions down in the comments below:

1.       Phantom Planet – “California”

Not moving to California or had your enjoyment of this song killed by watching up to four seasons of the O.C. you say?  Well, that may be the case for some people; however, this is just a fun, light and breezy song that instills into the listener the desire to just hit the road and go.  Before long, you’ll find yourself shouting California at the top of your lungs as the anthem for this new adventure in your life.

2.       Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – “Runnin’ Down a Dream”

Many times, the reason for a move is due to finding a new job, and if you are moving because you found a new job, congratulations! For the rest of you, you’re still working to chase that dream and  this song is perfect for you to focus on that dream while you’re driving down the road getting ready for that next step in the right direction!

3.       Explosions in the Sky – “Your Hand in Mine”

This band hails from Austin, TX and is largely responsible for the soundtrack used in the film adaptation of Friday Night Lights.  This song is especially used prominently in that film.  Explosions in the Sky are a completely instrumental band, and this song encompasses a lot of what they excel at musically.  Who would think that a music that says so little really can say to much and can speak to the listener, but this track definitely accomplishes that and is the perfect “open road” song as you’re taking in the scenery during the drive.  If you’re listening to this while working, close your eyes and just envision your dream vacation spot.

4.       OK Go – “This Too Shall Pass”

OK Go have made a career out of being creative, which has turned them into an internet sensation.  The video for “Here it Goes Again”(or that cool treadmill video) was at one time the most watched video on the internet during the start of the YouTube boom.  Well, to spark interest in their January 2010 release for “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky” the guys were back at it again with this really catchy tune and one of the more innovative YouTube music videos ever. However, the stress of moving (whether you’re dealing with a moving company or not) needs to be let go, because once it’s all over, there are new adventures that lie ahead.  If you absolutely need something to put a smile on your face, you can always check out the below video as well.

5.       Led Zeppelin – “What Is & What Should Never Be”

There’s never a bad excuse to put Led Zeppelin on a playlist.  Close your eyes, allow Bonham, Jones, Page, and Plant swoon you into a relaxing journey for roughly four minutes and 45 seconds!

6.       Modest Mouse – “Float On”

After being swooned in a state of relaxation by our boys from over the big blue pond, it’s time to get back to preparing for your big move.  Whether packing, loading, pricing out a new home, doing change of address, or you just got off the rest stop and need to exit back onto the interstate on your way to your new home, this song will allow you to “Float On!”

7.       Ray LaMontagne – “Shelter”

This song is one of Ray’s more commonly covered Songs.  Most famously covered by Kelly Clarkson following the events of Hurricane Katrina, the story of how Ray became a musician and the events of his life leading up until he released “Trouble” in 2005 really makes you happy he’s living the American dream.  This song is chosen because a) Ray has one of the more soulful voices in all contemporary music, and b) sometimes our move is something that doesn’t excite us.  Whether we’re leaving to get away, we are leaving behind friends, family, things, or places we

8.       Foo Fighters – “Times Like These” (Either Studio or Acoustic Versions)

We’ll leave this one up to preference as either one works.  The studio version off of “One By One” is one of the roaring anthems that Dave Grohl has made a career off of in his post-Nirvana days. The acoustic version is another superb rendition of this track and feels more reflective and laid back.  Either way, this song is fitting for a major change in life of leaving and moving on to something better because “it’s times like these where we learn to live again.”

9.       Joshua Radin – “Brand New Day”

No, this is not a cover of the Sting tune.  Joshua Radin owes his success in part with being good friends with Zach Braff of Scrubs fame, who knows a thing or two about making broody, indie playlists.  This is also one of Radin’s more positive tunes in his repertoire, as it is about rejuvenation after discovering new love, but the overall message of everything will be okay and optimism about the future is why this is fitting for volume one of our playlist.

10.   U2 – “Walk On”

As we finish full circle on volume one of “The Moving Playlist,” it’s only fitting to open and close with two songs that amount to great anthems.  U2 has amounted a small empire off their ability to write anthems that they can jam out amongst a small sea of humanity in arenas around the world.  Between Bono’s larger than life persona and The Edge’s unique glassy guitar rhythms that has been often emulated since, U2 has always found a way to connect with the listener on that personal level.  This one comes off their underappreciated 2000 album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” (with other hit singles like “Elevation” and “Stuck in a Moment That You Can’t Get Out Of”).  This song does a great job of being able to connect with a variety of listeners at a variety of places in their lives; however, the message is one that works universally.  Keep on living life.  It may not be easy at times, but in the end it’ll all work out for the best.  Therefore, while you are completing your full service move, remember to “walk on, stay safe tonight!”

Coleman Allied and Alabama Football at the 2011 Capital One Bowl

by MattBolin 3. February 2011 23:42

Those who heavily follow college football know that yesterday was one of the last major days of the football year before everything slows down until kick off in September.  Yes, yesterday was National Signing Day, and the University of Alabama had another banner year in recruiting to which we here at Coleman American Moving Services offer a huge ROLL TIDE!  However, it was just a month ago that the University of Alabama Football Team and Coach Nick Saban made the New Years Day journey down to Orlando, Fl to play the Michigan State Spartans.  With being the official moving company for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team, we decided to take a short video of the Alabama truck sitting outside the Citrus Bowl in Orlando along with a unique take of Green Day’s hit tune Basket Case by The Million Dollar Band.  Enjoy!
